Screen Time and Dry Eye: What You Should Know

Back-to-School Screen Time & Dry Eye: What You Should Know

The Blink Connection

When we focus on a screen, our blink rate drops by more than half. A normal blink rate is about 15–20 times per minute — but during screen use, that can fall to 5–7. Blinking spreads tears across the ocular surface. Fewer blinks means less tear film spreading across the eye, which means faster tear evaporation and dryness.

Kids are especially vulnerable because they rarely complain about it. They won’t say “my eyes are dry.” Instead, they’ll say they’re tired, rub their eyes, or complain of blur. Parents often chalk this up to screen fatigue in general, but the root cause is frequently an unstable tear film.

As an adult, you’re likely logging in hours of screen time yourself: work emails, spreadsheets, video calls. Over time, a decreased blink rate can lead to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Everytime we blink it stimulates oil to come out of the Meibomian glands that line our upper and lower lids. Decreased blink rate can make these oil glands sluggish or blocked. The oil layer of your tear film keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly.

MGD is one of the most common (and most overlooked) drivers of chronic dry eye in adults.

Simple Habits That Help

The 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This resets blink rate and gives the tear film a chance to recover.

Blink consciously: Set a habit of a few slow, full blinks every so often — it sounds simple, but it makes a real difference.

Ophthalmic heat masks: A few minutes in the evening helps keep oil glands functioning well, for both kids and adults.

Position screens slightly below eye level: This naturally narrows the eye opening and reduces tear evaporation.

When to Come In

If dryness, grittiness, or fatigue is a daily struggle — for you or your child — it may be more than just “screen fatigue.” At Advanced Dry Eye & Wellness, we specialize in identifying the why behind dry eye symptoms, whether that’s MGD, evaporative dry eye, or something else entirely. A quick evaluation can uncover what’s really going on and what will actually help — before it becomes a long-term habit your eyes are fighting against.

Cheers to a new school year!
